WE DEPLORE THE CONDITION INTO WHICH THE CROPPIES' ACRE NATIONAL MONUMENT SITE HAS BEEN ALLOWED TO FALL.

It is visited at night by people who use it for drinking and drug-taking and is locked up by day.   Croppies Acre is remembered in Dublin folklore as the site of a mass grave in which the bodies of dead insurgents were thrown in 1798.   Among those lying in Croppies’ Acre are reputedly the bones of Bartholomew Teeling and Matthew Tone, both hanged at the Provost Prison on Arbour Hill after the Battle of Ballinamuck on 8 September 1798.

The Office of Public Works and the Minister of State are directly responsible for this terrible neglect, along with the Ministers of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht (currently Jimmy Deenihan),  Environment, Community and Local Governemtn (currently Phil Hogan) and of Transport, Tourism and Sport (currently Leo Varadkar).  Their areas of responsibility also relate to a site of historical and cultural importance, serving also as a tourist attraction right outside Collins Barracks Museum (and lying between the Luas line on one side and Heuston Quay eastbound road on the other).

WE DEMAND THE SITE

To be cleaned up and made safe

To be lit at night and security cameras functioning and monitored

To be monitored regularly throughout day and night

To be opened up to general public access during the hours of daylight
