Open Letter to President Bush, US Congress and Iranian authorities
We the undersigned citizens of the United States are deeply concerned with the collision course our nation is on with the Sovereign country of Iran. The carnage of the Iraq War is vividly clear to the world and our elected officials cannot impose another one on American and Iranian peoples.
The prospects of war, the possibility of sustained bombardment, and the use of Nuclear weapons is an unthinkable scenario. The human cost to innocent Iranian civilians can be in the hundreds of thousands, if not, millions. US Armed forces will be involved in another endless war with thousands of casualties and broken families.
Iranian civil infrastructure will be destroyed for generations to come with horrifying consequences for survivors.
The economic consequences of this war will have disastrous affects on world economies with the possibility of oil fields being destroyed and oil shipments from the Persian Gulf halted.
This war could easily turn into a regional conflict involving Pakistan and Israel with hundreds of nuclear weapons on each side.
A regional war involving the US with major Middle Eastern countries may bring a global religious confrontation involving many more countries, opening Pandoras box with consequences lasting for decades to come.
Our unmatched military superiority will create heartfelt frustration and anger for hundreds of millions of people in the region. This can translate into an endless army of Jihadists willing to die for revenge. This is not the world we envision for our children and our childrens children.
We, Citizens of the United States, applaud recent comments by GOP Sen. Richard Lugar, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn. for direct talks between the United States and Iran. We urge President Bush and the U.S. Congress to engage Iran and other concerned countries of the region based on the following principles:
1. Bush Administration to publicly renounce any nuclear strikes against Iran for fear that such action would have disastrous consequences for the security of the United States and the world.
2. Bush Administration to initiate Bilateral talks between the United States and Iran on the issue of alleged Iranian Nuclear weapons and technology.
3. Bush Administration to initiate UN Sponsored Multilateral talks between the United States, Russia, Iran, Israel, China, and other countries of the region on issues of Disarmament, Nuclear Free Middle East, Regional Security and Economic Cooperation with a deadline to report back to the UN.
No matter how powerful a country feels it should avoid war at all cost, as those who have fought or survived it testify that it is Humanity at its worst.
Respectfully
Concerned Citizens of the United States.
