IN THE LIKENESS OF THE MASA
The search for the next PUP president starts and ends
with Dr. Emanuel De Guzman.
We are scholars. We survived a frugal, almost spartan lifestyle, in hopes of carving from our humble beginnings a socially conscious and pro-active appreciation of our academic community and the larger Philippine society, on the strength of our collective will to know, to be, to belong.
We share a common memory. An impoverished student life. Food wrapped in plastic wrappers and styropore. That plain, half cup of rice nourished only by sabaw. We ate not to get full. We ate to give our hopes sustenance; to give our dreams for a brighter future and a better Philippines a chance to bear fruit in the long years of struggling to improve as students, and as citizens. We were poor. But we were not hopeless.
We are brave. We embrace and fight: the abrasiveness of poverty, the indifference and outright violence spawned by economic inequality, and the dire consequences of an educational system that does not look after the interests of those without means. We are brave. We have learned how to fight. We are courageous.
In 1986, we installed the first president in our likeness Dr. Nemesio Prudente. Doc, as we all called him, was the president that gave us the democratic space; that made us all more critical, and unrelenting in pursuing excellence and social relevance.
Today, as the university searches for the next best president, we stand united, collectively determined to find the fittest candidate for our next president. We need a president mounted on the mold sculpted by the masa. A mold that gave birth to a Doc Prudente. A mold where Dr. Emanuel De Guzman is the fittest to take over.
By our will and collective strength we will see our efforts bear fruit. The next Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) president will be in our likeness. We are, after all, still, and will always be, the masa.
