We, the undersigned, urge Jefferson County prosecutor, Robert G. Wilkins, to seek full felony charges against Jason Coats in the April shooting death of a chimpanzee in Festus, Missouri. We further urge Mr. Wilkins to not accept a lesser plea but to press fully to ensure that Mr. Coats is incarcerated for his crime. Mr. Wilkins, although not easy, this is the right thing to do and in the best interest of Jefferson County citizens. Mr. Coats has demonstrated by his past actions that he presents a clear and present menace to Jefferson County citizens and further dismissal of his actions will eventually result in an event more tragic than this. His continued sneering at and disrespect for authority can only stop once he is truly punished for his actions.
