To Launch a Campaign against the Arrest of Students in Burma
Release All The Political Prisoners Including Min Ko Naing, Chairperson of All Burma Federation of Student Unions
1. The role of students and their activism in Burma were very significant in Burmese anti-colonial movement, national independence movements, democracy and internal peace movements. In every student movement, ABFSU solidified and led the student mass. Also in the 1988 Peoples General Strike in Burma. ABFSU moved and led the students mass to the peoples uprising. ABFSU was reestablished with a new generation of students in 1988, as it has been underground since 1962; Min Ko Naing was elected as the chairperson of ABFSU at the student rally of 28 August 1988.
2. As the regime crushed all the civilian organizations and their movement against the military rule in 1988, ABFSU and the student movement were severely oppressed as well, Min Ko Naing, the chairperson of ABFSU, and many student leaders were arrested. Whenever any students movements took place, the regime reject all offers of peaceful dialogue with the students to reach a solution, as well as what the students desired. Instead, they crushed the movements, arresting and torturing the various prisons of Burma. At present, approximately one thousand students are still being detained in the various prisons of Burma. Some have died in while in custody.
3. Currently, thought the military regime and Aung San Suu Kyi, a key Burmese democracy leader, are in secret talks about the future of Burma, as of yet there are no sign of progress. In particular, there has been no release of any student political prisoners, including Min Ko Naing. We ABFSU, have already voiced over view that there cannot be a genuine dialogue without the release of political prisoners, including students.
4. Min Ko Naing, Chairperson of ABFSU, was arrested in 1989 and has been in prison for the past 12 years. Some student leaders have also been detained for 10 years; many of those were sentenced again after theyd finish their jail term. As we, ABFSU, are primarily concern with the release of student political prisoners, we need to achieve international awareness about the campaign to release Burmese political prisoners. Therefore, we request all the students and student unions around the world to join us and express your solidarity with Burmese students in the campaign to release student political prisoners in Burma.
STUDENTS SHOULD BE IN SCHOOL, NOT IN JAIL!
