In Queensland, hamsters along with ferrets, rabbits, gerbils, weasels and dingoes/hybrids are banned. You will be charged with a maximum fine of $80,000 for keeping declared mammals. I believe that this is completely unfair. The government believes that they could escape and repopulate in Australia and kill native wildlife. If they truly believed this, then guinea pigs, dogs, cats, horses, goats, donkeys, black and brown rats and house mice would also be illegal.
