We, the residents of Wilmington NC are asking the Wilmington NC police department to take more proactive and aggressive action against motorcycle theft in Wilmington. We do not ask them to do this alone, however, due to strained manpower and politics. We, the community, need and want to be involved. We propose that the police and citizens collaborate to set up a reposessed or possibly a donated motorcycle in a parking lot or apartment complex (which seems to be the most common place of theft) and have the bike equipped with a GPS tracking system to be observed with cameras. We ask this because of the problematic circumstances surrounding motorcycle theft such as: ease of transportation, organization of the crimes, a national market for cheap stolen parts, the incredibly high rate of this type of crime in Wilmington and a lack of evidence or suspects in many cases which are immediately filed as inactive as little as one day after they are reported. To us, this matters a great deal. To all the victims of motorcycle theft and to all the riders who fear parking their motorcycle outside of a restaurant long enough to eat lunch, this is very important.
