In 2007 the Counihan-Sanchez moved to Ireland, to look after their terminally ill granddad, vacating their council flat in Carlton Vale, - Brent council did not tell them they had an option to retain the tenancy. When they moved back to Brent they were allocated a private let at £690 a week of which they paid £230 and Housing benefit the rest. But a year after they told the council they had inherited nine and a half acres of unsellable land in Ireland the council stopped Housing Benefit and sent them a final bill for £46,000. Then they moved them to a £500 a week run-down flat in Ealing. Solicitors acting for the family have managed to stop an eviction notice set for 13 August. The youngest child is autistic, a second child is in hospital because of complications after eye surgery and Isabel’s mum is also very ill in hospital.
The Labour Council must NOT simply act as accountants, bailiffs, butchers, or executioners for the Tory government
We the undersigned residents of Brent or supporters of the Counihan-Sanchez family demand that Brent Council
1. House this family in suitable and affordable accommodation in the borough of Brent in South Kilburn.
2. Cease the attempts to avoid their legal and moral responsibilities to this family.
3. Cancel the outrageous assessment that they have “made themselves intentionally homeless”.
4. Cancel the £46,000 bill for “overpaid” housing benefit, and the £5,000 bill from the temporary flat in south Ealing.
