Immediate Induction of Bill Griggs Into The Buddy Holly Walk of Fame

We the undersigned are asking the Civic Lubbock board to consider immediate induction of Bill Griggs into the West Texas/Buddy Holly Walk of Fame in Lubbock, Texas.

There is no single person that has done more for the world-wide promotion of Buddy Holly, The Crickets, Lubbock, Texas, west Texas music, and ultimately Lubbock, Texas tourism than Bill Griggs. People from around the globe have descended upon the Hub City of Lubbock to experience Buddy Hollys hometown and have the chance to meet Bill Griggs. He has been recognized around the world as the authority on Buddy Holly. Bill Griggs was presented with gold records from MCA Records for persevering and continuing to promote and preserve the music and the memory of Lubbocks Buddy Holly. He created a fan club that boasted over 5,500 members from all fifty states and thirty-four different countries.

It is a fact that in spite of the fact that he was not even born in Texas, Bill Griggs moved to Lubbock to dedicate his life to researching the facts and sharing the stories of Buddy Holly and The Crickets and the other artists who created the west Texas sound. Bill Griggs has spent countless hours at the Buddy Holly Center giving tours (FREE OF CHARGE!) so that one more fan or a group of them might know the special part that west Texas and its people played in the story of early rock-n-roll. He has hosted conventions in Lubbock, music festivals, and visitors in his home, just so we could learn one more thing about the group of west Texas teenagers who made music history.

Through the writings of Bill Griggs, the fans of Buddy Holly have traveled in a virtual time machine. By reading his articles, booklets, or listening to his interviews, fans have traveled from a small home in Lubbock, Texas on September 7, 1936, the day Buddy was born, to the Hi-D-Ho restaurant and the roller rink sock hops. They have traveled to the stages of Lubbock High School, to the Ed Sullivan Show, from the United States, to Canada, to England, Australia, and unfortunately, to a snow-covered field in Clear Lake, Iowa, where Buddy Holly, and not his music, died.

There are a number of resources available to give fans the facts of Buddy Hollys life and career. Whether it is books, television, radios, or movies, most of these resources cite Bill Griggs as their source. You can find any number books to discover what he accomplished in his short career. But Bill Griggs took it a step further. Through his research and passion to get the story right, Bill Griggs captured the thoughts, the emotions, and the reflections of the events as they happened from the people WHO WERE THERE. Because of recording technology, the world will always know how Buddy Holly sang. Thanks to the efforts of Bill Griggs, the world will know how Buddy Holly LIVED.

There is one last available plaque space on the West Texas/Buddy Holly Walk of Fame. It is located next to the plaque of Buddy Holly. There is absolutely NO PERSON who is more deserving of this induction space than William Frederick (Bill) Griggs. Because time is of the essence, we the Buddy Holly and The Crickets fans from around the world are respectfully asking the Civic Lubbock board that you waive the required board meeting and instead consider immediate induction of Bill Griggs into the West Texas/Buddy Holly Walk of Fame. For the fans of Buddy Holly, The Crickets, and more importantly, the fans and friends of Bill Griggs, there could be no greater way to recognize and honor this passionat and dedicated man.
