I am writing to express my most unequivocal concern regarding the Australian government's decision to deem Mr. Ardeshir Gholipour inadmissible to apply for refugee status and deportable back to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
It is sadly brought to my knowledge that this inmate has been detained in Australia for over 5 years, which has shattered him and resulted in him being deeply depressed and anxious.
I put forward my grave concern as to Ardeshir like the other victims of the Iranian repressive regime, have not been treated appropriately by the government, but has dramatically experienced such traumatic situation in the detention centre. Ardeshir had to flee the country due to his social grouping and political activities against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Gholipour's case is significant for a number of reasons. First, for his great courage in campaigning for freedom in Iran. In 1987 Gholipour was arrested and spent over 21 months in Iran's notorious Evin prison for distributing pamphlets on behalf of the Iran Freedom Movement. As a writer and designer for a number of provincial papers he produced articles on social reform matters.
He faces a serious risk of torture and execution should he be deported to Iran. I call on the Australian government to review its decision and grant Mr.Gholipour admission and protection from torture and deportation.
Needless to say, I hold the Australia government accountable for his life and safety.
