To: Governor of Florida and Clemency Board
Leroy Harden has been in-and-out of adult prisons since April of 1968. He was a 17 year-old when sentenced to life in the state of Florida for the murder of a cab driver. In June of 1978, Mr. Harden was paroled. However, he returned to prison in December 1991 for moving without notifying his parole officer. Since 1991, Mr. Harden has languished in prison with parole denied once in 2001 and again in June 2003.

From July 28, 2004 until May 20, 2005, Mr. Harden was placed in the Miami-Dade County jail so that he could serve as a witness against an inmate who had an altercation with an officer. During this time, Mr. Harden's eyesite became progressively worse. Miami-Dade County officers neglected to take him to eye appointments 5 times, claiming that there was inadequate transportation. As a result, Leroy Harden is now permanently blind.

In addition to being blind, Mr. Harden is also confined to a wheelchair. He cannot walk on his own and needs assistance to use the bathroom, take a shower, and get out of bed. The facility where Mr. Harden resides has assigned a fellow inmate with no medical training whatsoever to assist Leroy.

Leroy Harden is physically deteriorating at a rapid pace in his current institution and we will now present this petition to the Governor of Florida and the Clemency board in hopes they will have the compassion that any human being should have. Leroy is very remorseful over the crime he committed when he was a 17 year-old kid. He does not deserve to spend an eternity behind the high walls of a prison without adequate medical attention.

Leroy Harden deserves a future. He deserves a future outside the bars of the cell he has called home for the last 11 years. WE THE PEOPLE now approach those who have the power to set him free and give him that chance. We hope and pray that those same people will offer him the life he should have.

Please join in and sign this petition. It will be presented to the Governor and the Clemency board when the case for clemency comes before them. Thank you.
