It has come to my attention that Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth film in the Harry Potter series, is going to be 2 hours and 30 minutes long, or around there. Roughly 2 and a half hours, which is around the same running time as the first and second Harry Potter films. It strikes me as odd, since the Goblet of Fire book is WAY longer than Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets.
Now, as much as I understand your worries about the film's success, it is in the interest of the fans of the book that the film be longer, so as to accomodate more faithfulness to book. To cut out so much stuff, just so that the film can be too short is completely ridiculous.
If you really are worried about a 3+ hour film being successful or not, then I'd say you have no reason to worry. Long films are usually very successful. Just look at Lord of the Rings or Titanic as prime examples. In fact, if Goblet of Fire was to be made into a 3 hour movie, the public would accept it better, because the fans of the book would be pleased that there could be more of the book in the movie.
Prisoner of Azkaban was about 2 hours and 15 minutes long, and I found this absolutely ridiculous. The movie SHOULD have been 3 hours long, and not have so much cut out of it. I realise it's an adaptation, but when you unnecissarily cut things out, just because you're worried about the running time, it is just irresponsible. 2 hours and 15 minutes is WAY too short.
This is a plea from the fans of the books that you make Goblet of Fire 3 hours or longer. NO SHORTER. Because Goblet of Fire is my personal favourite of all the books, and I would be horrified to see it made into a 2 and a half hour long movie. That's just not enough time to put Goblet of Fire on the screen.
I realise the film is already in production, but you could have re-writes, and additional shooting if necissary. I don't care what you have to do, just do not release the film until it's running time is 180 minutes or more.
Thank-you.
