Mississauga Election Signs

- THAT we believe elections should be focused on the ideas of candidates, not how many signs they can afford to purchase, erect and maintain;
- THAT election signs are a source of clutter, blight, environmental damage, road hazards, wasted time, money and energy;
- THAT the cost of election signs, their maintenance and losses to vandalism create an undemocratic and unfair advantage for candidates who have the most money to spend on this activity; and
- THAT the 2006 municipal election gave rise to many complaints by residents and official candidates concerning the above issues
- THEREFORE, your petitioners call upon Mississauga City Council to enact policy, bylaws and adopt any other means to ensure a level playing field for all candidates in future elections by eliminating election signs from all future election campaigns, and instead making all candidate election platforms equally available to voters by posting in civic buildings - such as libraries and community centres - and on city websites and local media.
