Nationalization and Inter-linking of Indian Rivers

We, the Undersigned, are the people of India. Every time elections are around the corner in some states, the political parties start a hue and cry over water sharing of the major rivers and refuse to abide by Supreme Court's decision on water sharing. The beneficiaries of the water tribunals arranged by the Supreme Court do not get the water owing to political games played by the political parties to win electoral gains.



The people most impacted by the avarice of the politicians are the farmers who depend on the river water for irrigation and common citizens who depend on the rivers for their drinking water needs in rain-deficient areas. The people impacted by the bad management of river waters are the farmers whose crops are destroyed in floods and the people who live in the catchment areas whose houses are submerged due to floods during the monsoon season. This is a problem of plenty in sometimes and a problem of acute shortage at other times. There are long-standing disputes between riparian states on water-sharing and the Supreme Court's tribunal decisions are ignored by the upper riparian states.



In order to find an amicable and lasting solution to the problem faced by Indians living in villages, we believe that nationalization the rivers and interlinking them will prevent exploitation of river waters by the upper riparian states, will ensure equitable distribution of river waters among all the beneficiary states and will prevent flash floods in the catchment areas causing damage to lives and property.



With this petition, we ask our members of Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) to enact a law to nationalize and interlink rivers in India.
