In solidarity with and in support of the DNDi's Neglected Disease R&D appeal1, we strongly urge the Canadian government to support the Brazilian and Kenyan resolution "A Global Framework on Essential Health Research and Development"2, to be debated at the 58th World Health Assembly held on 22nd-26th May 2006. This resolution is a response to growing concern over the inadequacy of the current global system for supporting innovation in new medicines and other health technologies, as well as concern about the impact of an increasing percentage of people without access to essential medicines.

Among others, we ask the Canadian Government to support the following critical elements of the resolution:

- The establishment of a global framework for supporting essential medical research and development, based on the principle of equitable sharing of the costs of research and development.

- The creation of a Working Group of interested Member States to examine incentives to encourage greater, more sustainable investment in useful research and development that responds and is prioritized according to patients needs, especially in resource-poor settings.

- To make global health and medicines a strategic sector
