To: The Congress of the United States

...We, the undersigned below, citizens of the United States of America, the tax payers, the foundation for the life of this country, request that marijuana be legalized throughout the United States.

Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug. According to the 2005 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 97.5 million Americans aged 12 or older tried marijuana at least once in their lifetimes, representing 40.1\% of the U.S. population in that age group. The number of past year marijuana users in 2005 was approximately 25.4 million (10.4\% of the population aged 12 or older) and the number of past month marijuana users was 14.6 million (6.0\%).

There were a total of 1,846,351 state and local arrests for drug abuse violations in the United States during 2005. Of the drug arrests, 4.9\% were for marijuana sale/manufacturing and 37.7\% were for marijuana possession. The government obviously makes a LOT of money off of drug-related arrests.

Most illicit drugs like opiates, alcohol and cocaine decrease the generation of new neurons in the brain, but marijuana appears to have the opposite effect on this process. Researchers from the University of Saskatchewan have published their findings on marijuana's effects on the brain in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. On top of the drug's promotion of brain cell growth - called neurogenesis - marijuana also appeared to have antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties.

A team, led by researcher Xia Zhang, worked with rats that were given a synthesized version of marijuana twice per day for 10 days. After this period, the rats displayed evidence of new neuron creation in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved in developing memories.

Zhang's team suspected the new brain cells might also be associated with a reduction in anxiety and depression, as previous studies had indicated medications used to treat anxiety and depression achieve their effect this way.

The researchers explored the possible antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects of the drug on the rats by exposing them and a control group of rats to a number of environmental/food based tests. The tests indicated that the rats who were given the marijuana displayed both a reduction in anxiety behaviors and indications of antidepressant effects.

The researchers conclude that there is a link between increased adult neurogenesis (brain cell regeneration) and modified behavior following cannabinoid treatment. They say the findings are important because they demonstrate the positive roles cannabinoids and their receptors play in brain processing and medicine.

It has been proven that within the first three drinks of alcohol, the human brain is permanently damaged. There are millions of arrest due to alcohol related violence, but next to never has there been an arrest due to violence while using cannabis.

Marijuana is able to be taxed, simply by approving a stamp to be placed onto each bag of marijuana grown by a licensed cannabis grower. Marijuana is no worse than alcohol, yet alcohol is consumed and now the most abused legal drug.

Much like alcohol, marijuana must have appropriately age limits and restrictions on how much you may possess.

Legalize marijuana, or provide the citizens of the United States a reason not to. MILLIONS of Americans smoke marijuana, and thousands of family are broken apart when citizens are prosecuted for smoking a product that is just as harmful as cigarettes, yet less harmful than alcohol.

Free the citizens, give us the choice.
