Petition Against Nativity Photo Bans

The first school photo ban was in a Yorkshire primary school in 1999. Since then, an increasing number of schools and sports clubs have prevented parents from photographing their childs nativity play or sports events. In other schools, photography is not banned but is still highly regulated, with parents told they must register their camera or that they can only photograph their own child.

This regulation of caring parents does nothing to stop paedophiles from obtaining illicit images of children. Instead, the main result of photo bans is to damage families memories and childrens records of their achievements and experiences. Photo bans also create an unpleasant atmosphere in schools, since parents are effectively being treated with suspicion and excluded from school events.

There is no central government law banning photography in schools: these rules have been brought through on a case-by-case basis. This petition is initiated by parents and citizens who are concerned about the over-regulation of school photography. Together we call for a more liberal and proportionate approach to this essentially innocent and positive activity.
