Tena Koutou Katoa,

There is a BIG issue in New Zealand where statistics are saying that if you are a Maori, you are unlikely to achieve. Too many Maori students are being left behind and disengage from education before gaining the skills, knowledge, and qualifications needed to reach their full potential.

There is a policy called 'Ka Hikitia - Accelerating Success 2013 - 2017' which aims at stepping up how the education system performs to ensure Maori rangatahi (teenagers) are enjoying and achieving educational success as Maori.

Teachers and principals are given a handout of this policy and are expected to read it and follow the guidelines. However, majority of them will pick it up and throw it away to the side and take no notice of it. What I aim at achieving is making it so this policy is COMPULSORY for all schools to follow.

Making 'Ka Hikitia' COMPULSORY means that education will reflect Maori identity, culture and language which enables Maori to excel and reach their full potential.

As a Maori Rangatahi, I have the responsibility to ensure that future generations are able to achieve at the best of their abilities. Society says that if you are a Maori you will not do well in school. I want to prove these statistics wrong and prove that Maori can achieve at high standards.

Help me prove these statistics wrong and sign this petition to make Ka Hikitia compulsory for all schools to follow. You can help improve education and change the lives of all Maori across Aotearoa!

Nga Mihi
