Petition to Protect Religious Freedom in Canada

To,
The Honourable Michael J.Bryant
Attorney General
Ontario
CC: Media
We, the undersigned, are outraged by attempts by some individuals and groups
in Canada and elsewhere to tarnish the image of Islamic laws (Sharia) by
propagating false and misleading information regarding it.
It is our belief that Islamic laws are just, non-discriminatory and provide
equal protection to women when applied without any cultural, ethnic or other
non-religious influences.
Some of the salient features of Islamic law (Sharia) include:
1. Husband is required to provide for all financial needs of the family.
2. Wife's earnings are her own to keep and use according to her own
wishes.
3. Abuse is never allowed. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) never
raised a finger against a woman or a child in his life.
4. Custody of the children is awarded to the mother in preference to the
father.
We believe that the setting up of mediation and arbitration boards for
their respective communities by competent Islamic and other religious
groups, as long as they do not violate any of the Canadian laws and as long
as two parties to a dispute agree to it, are a much needed cure to many of the
problems besetting our families and our society.
We believe that the campaign to stop Islamic, Jewish and other religious
groups from forming mediation and arbitration boards will result in the
violation of the rights of faith communities guaranteed by the Canadian
constitution.
