The Right Honourable Stephen Harper
Prime Minister of Canada
Office of the Prime Minister
80 Wellington Street
Ottawa, ON K1A 0A2
Dear Prime Minister Harper:
Whereas child sexual abuse survivors have suffered devastating physical, psychological, social and economic consequences from the experience of child sexual abuse;
and
Whereas every Canadian child is entitled to protection from child sexual abuse by Canada's justice system;
and
Whereas all Canadians are stakeholders in addressing the direct and indirect socioeconomic costs of child sexual abuse, in the form of lost productivity and costs to the healthcare and social welfare system;
We, the Undersigned, are asking the Government of Canada to undertake a review of Canada's child sexual abuse laws, and the sentencing of individuals convicted of violating those laws, to ensure that child sexual abuse victims are adequately protected by the criminal justice system.
We ask that the Government of Canada commit sustained resources to the prevention and early detection of child sexual abuse.
We ask for these things as child sexual abuse survivors, the friends and families of child sexual abuse survivors, and Canadians who feel responsible for protecting our country's children from harm and maltreatment.
We ask for these things because Canadian children who are experiencing sexual abuse at this moment need their Government to make a statement that they are worth protecting.
Respectfully,
The Undersigned concerned Canadian citizens
