PROTEST THE CENSORSHIP OF PALESTINIANS AT COTE ST LUC LIBRARY, MONTREAL

PROTESTER CONTRE LA CENSURE DES PHOTOGRAPHIES DE PALESTINIENS A LA BIBLIOTHEQUE CSL, MONTREAL (francais ci-dessous)

The Jewish Alliance Against the Occupation and supporters are protesting the censoring by the Cote-St-Luc borough administration of Zahara Kazemi's photographs of Palestinians in her human rights exhibition at the C.S.L. library. We support the demand by Kazemi's son Stephan Hashami that her photo exhibit be restored in full at the C.S.L. library and that a full apology be made to the Kazemi family and the public.

It is absurd and a sick irony that an exhibit honouring Kazemi whose state
murder in Iran two years ago was the ultimate censorship, has been censored
posthumously as well by a Canadian municipal government. C.S.L. joins the
Iranian Ayatollahs, and other nefarious censors in history such as
Duplessis, Hitler, Mussolini, Joe McCarthy, and the Taliban with their fear
of and hostility towards free speech and ideas.

Historically, Jews were considered People of the Book with a rich tradition
of ideas, dissent and debate. When supporters of Israel call portrayals of
the violations of Palestinians' human rights or any criticism of Israel as
anti-Semitic, they effectively betray that tradition. Attempts to erase
Palestinians from public consciousness, and history as well as physically
removing them from their land has placed some Jewish leaders within a
shameful tradition of intolerance and fundamentalism. Kazemi's work drives
homes the point that the issue is about global justice and human rights -
not about any supposed clash of civilizations.

While Zahara Kazemi was an advocate for human rights across the globe, her
distinction is largely due to the fact that she paid for her criticisms of
her own native country, an Islamiscist state with her life. This is
presumably why such an exhibit was being held at the C.S.L. library in the
first place. It is shameful that a library's mission of free speech and
access to information stops when the issue is Palestinians and Israel.

=====================
