Rename Black Christmas to Black Holidays

Dimension FIlms and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have announced the opening of the film Black Christmas on Dec 25th, 2006. This petition's goal is to change the name to a more inclusive "Black Holidays" . We at waronxmas.net are concerned that many Americans, including Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Universalist Unitarians, Secular Humanists, and Puritans may feel excluded by the title of the film. Given that the horror story is set against a Holiday backdrop, and that Christmas itself is not central to the plot, we believe that it is reasonable to change the title to "Black Holidays", thereby including persons of all beliefs and holiday orientations. We fully expect Dimension Films and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to be sympathetic to our concerns. Renaming the film has the added benefit of widening its appeal beyond the narrow market consisting of Christians and Atheists who enjoy receiving presents.

If this film is not renamed as we ask, scenarios similar to the following will no doubt occur across America:

On the first day of class at an elementary school in Houston, Texas, little Yeshua Goldstein's Christian friends will all talk about the presents they received on Christmas day, and how their parents were outraged at Black Christmas destroying the true meaning of Christmas. Yeshua will be filled with a sense of self-loathing and lack of appreciation for his own religion, Judaism.

On this same day, at an elementary school in Los Angeles, California, little Vashti Gupta's Christian friends will share stories about their parents' eggnog induced antics, the Black Christmas tickets they received as stocking stuffers, and the gorefest of violence that their cool parents allowed them to see. Vashti, a Hindu of Indian descent, will feel like an outsider, though she was born in California after her parents became U.S. citizens in the pursuit of the American dream. She will go home and sadly ask her mother and father why they don't celebrate Christmas and why they talk differently from the other children's parents.


Please, rename Black Christmas to Black Holidays, for the sake of the children.
