Request to Epic Games to release the original Unreal Tournament as Open Source.

We, users of the Linux operating system and members of the open source community would like to request that Epic Games, Inc release the source code of the original Unreal Tournament, and that it be placed under an Open Source Initiative certified license. It has been observed that id Software have started a tradition of releasing the source of a game to the public once development costs have been recouped and a profit has been made, and we hope Epic will be willing to continue this.
It is also realised that because the games are all developed from a single engine, there is a concern relating to the release of code still of relevance to the company. However, we have been told that current versions of the game's engine are sufficiently different from its state at version 436 (the last version of Unreal Tournament) that we hope its release would not be detrimental to Epic or its present and future profit. Rather, it is hoped that the source of this game can be placed in public trust, that its development can continue via members of the community whose talents lie in that direction, and that the results of this are of benefit to all.
It is our opinion that this is one of the finest games of its kind to have yet been developed, and it is our interest in ensuring its' longevity that is our motivation for making this request.
