Return Newfoundland and Labrador's Military History

After Confederation in 1949 all military records, medals and historical documents belonging to Newfoundland and Labrador were taken from the province and became the property of the Federal Government. To this day, these items are maintained outside the province.

We, the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and all who sympathize with this cause, hereby petition the Government of Canada, the Department of National Defense and all other concerned agencies to return to this province all historical documents, medals, photographs, service records and any other miscellaneous items directly related to Newfoundland and Labradors rich military history prior to its entry into Confederation on March 31, 1949.

We feel that it is not acceptable for relics of our pre-confederation history to continue to reside outside the province. Rather, these items should be returned to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador for the educational and cultural benefit of its people.

We do not feel that these artifacts should remain in the possession of the Canadian Government or its agencies as they have no relation to Canadas history. These historical items relate solely to Newfoundland and Labradors history and as such all items should be returned to their rightful owners, the people of Newfoundland and Labrador in a timely fashion.
