Whereas the City of Kelowna actively promotes the concept of sustainability;
whereas the City of Kelowna actively promotes cycling as alternative transportation;
whereas the City of Kelowna, its residents, and the local business community benefit from the active participation of UBCO students, faculty, and staff within the community;
whereas the Quality of Life within the region would be more sustainable with a reduction in the number of motor vehicle commuter trips to and from the UBCO campus;
whereas no safe access exists for cyclists entering the UBCO campus from the east;
therefore, we the undersigned, without prejudice, do humbly petition the Mayor and City Counselors of Kelowna and all stakeholders listed above to:
(1) Implement an action plan to provide safe cycling access to the UBCO campus;
(2) Ensure the access begins at or near the junction of Sexsmith Rd. and Highway 97;
(3) Give serious consideration to the use of the Rails with Trails concept;
(4) Complete the access and have same ready for use by September 1, 2006.
