We, the parents of Kinnelon, would ask Mr. Opiekun and the Board of Education (BOE) to kindly reconsider their decision to outsource custodial services. Going down the privatization route will ultimately prove to be a false economy. This approach has been tried and tested in the past, only to revert back to hiring our own custodial staff. The following are some, but not all, of the many reasons why Kinnelon should not privatize custodial services.
1. Screening: Will the BOE require the private company to fingerprint and perform a thorough criminal background check by the NJ State Police and the FBI. Our present custodial staff has completed these statutory requirements.
2. Safety: Will the BOE continue the requirement for all outsourced custodians to have a Black Seal License (operation of boiler equipment)? NJ State law requires a licensed custodian to be on site at all times when school is open to the public.
3. Consistency: Many of our Kinnelon custodians have been with us for over 10 years - the children, especially children in elementary schools, are very familiar with custodians and parents trust them to be around their children. With a private service, this established relationship would be disrupted.
4. Dedication: Our custodians go above and beyond what is in their job description. They direct traffic at the elementary schools and also come in on weekends to shovel snow, for the safety of the children.
These services and amenities will be lost when our loyal custodians are gone!
