Multiple studies have shown that children who are involved in the arts have better grades, longer attention spans and more appreciation for hard work. They know how to collaborate and they contribute immeasurably to our community.
We request that the music, art and performing arts programs at every grade level be re-instated in their current form in the 2010-11 budget. This includes:
General MUSIC twice a week in grades K-5 at all elementary schools
60 minutes of ART each week at all elementary schools
Weekly INSTRUMENTAL lessons beginning in grade 4 at all elementary schools.
Preservation of SEPARATE 7TH AND 8TH GRADE CHORAL ENSEMBLES at the middle school
Preservation of the current STRINGS and TWO BANDS at the high school
Preservation of the 4-YEAR ACTING SEQUENCE for theatre studies
Preservation of CONCERT CHOIR, MUSIC HISTORY AND THEORY, and MUSIC TECHNOLOGY at the high school
Most colleges either require or highly recommend that applicants have a strong arts sequence. The cuts outlined in the Superintendent's Proposed Budget will result in significant curriculum erosion at all grade levels and will place our students at a severe disadvantage by denying them access to arts education.
