In December, the famous Standard Music Venue in Walthamstow will cease to be a live music venue to make way for plans to become a Turkish supermarket, which are already prevalent in the area. Music venues are being shut down left, right and centre, and the closure of The Standard will leave Walthamstow without a place for people to see bands locally, and those bands without a place to perform. Many world renowned bands such as Iron Maiden got their start at this place, as are many newer bands just trying to make their way up in the world. If The Standard closes, perhaps bands that could become huge with a local place to play to a good crowd will instead suffer financial losses from having to travel further out, lose morale, and lose faith.
I must also state that the owners and all the staff at The Standard will be forced out of their jobs. In this time where everything is becoming more expensive, this is a crushing blow to them. They are putting on a brave face, but The Standard is their life, and not just for financial reasons, but for quality of life, friends, good times and laughs.
Walthamstow Borough has already had too many entertainment hubs shut down in favour of flats or supermarkets. The cinema, the dog track, the stadium... Don't let it happen to The Standard too, humble as it may be, we love it.
