Surrey County Council plans to introduce parking charges across the county, with Reigate & Banstead proposed to be the first of the 11 districts to be affected. In total 587 bays which currently offer free parking are set to be replaced by Pay and Display areas.
We feel that this is a short-sighted policy, which will raise funds in the short-term, at the expense of our local traders, ultimately possibly threatening the survival of these very High Street shops, and in turn eliminating the source of that revenue, as well as the associated revenue in business rates currently generated.
We at redhillandreigate.co.uk, with the support of local trade associations the Reigate Business Guild and RH123.com feel we should be looking for ways to strengthen our local economy, and our retailers are pivotal to this endeavour. In addition we need to support our High Street retailers, if we don't want our towns to follow the fate of so many others across the United Kingdom. A vibrant, bustling town centre is essential for the identity of any successful town and its community.
