Dear Commissioners,
Two of the largest groups of Shelby County professionals, the Deputy Sheriffs Association and the Deputy Jailers/Corrections Deputies have in good faith attempted to negotiate with Sheriff Luttrell to maintain benefits that previous Sheriffs have honored for over thirty years.
Sheriff Luttrell honored those benefits included in memorandums of understanding with both groups during his first term as Sheriff. Now Sheriff Luttrell has informed both groups that benefits must be lowered and working conditions changed.
The employees believe the changes forced upon them are not only unfair but will directly affect the safety and well being of the citizens of Memphis and Shelby County.
As a concerned citizen I am asking the County Commission to form an impasse committee to resolve the differences between the Sheriff and both groups of employees. After all, the past and future success of the Sheriffs Office is directly attributed to the efforts of these employees.
