Karnataka state could boast one of the green spots in Indian map. As the poetic description is ''sundaravanagalanade''the land of sandlewood, evergreen forests of westernghats which forms the backbone of our fragile ecosystem of the land. Relentless deforestation in the last decade is tilting this delicate balance away. Thousands and thousands of acres of forest cover have disappeared in the malnad area alone. In the coorg area vast forest cover area are turning to barrenland.Bangalore city once a garden city with lush green has been turned to a concrete jungle. Incidences of airborne diseases are increasing at an alarmingly high level in Bangalore and other major cities of Karnataka due to increasing pollution. Rainfall has suffered a major blow with draught spreading in the heart of malnad area itself.according to a scientific analysis if the present level of ecodamage continues in the westernghats; we might lose river cauvery in another 40 years.
Every 5 years governments role in and out with no sincere effort to preserve our rich biodiversity. In the name of infrastructure development trees are axed day and night in Bangalore and other major cities. Whether it is road widening, corridor project, metrorail, and international airport project one common denominator is tree axing for no apparent reason by ill conceived people in power. It should be the primary responsibility of the democratically elected government to look after the health of the environment we live in. There are always numerous alternative options to pursue than to just axe trees. For instance there has been a high court ruling that unless one has planted 2 saplings and when they have grown for 2 years with sufficient reasons to cut trees then only one could proceed further. But it is so happening that it is the government itself the first culprit to getaway from this rule. Unless an awakening rises from people for our survival of tomorrow, disaster seems to be eminent in our land.
This petition aims to collect mass appeal against the government of Karnataka in failing to protect the biodiversity of our land. It is aimed through public interest litigation to bring the law making government to first mend its house in order protect the larger interest of the people of the state.
Unless we all pledge ''hasire-usiru'' and fight for the nature to survive, nature oneday will not let us live
