Simsbury's BOE Budget

The undersigned petitioners are very concerned about Simsbury's Board of Education budget for the 2006-2007 school year. As taxpayers and parents of children in the public school system, we urge you to set the Board of Education's budget cap as high as reasonably possible.

We are concerned that the under funding of our public schools is leading to a decline in the quality of our children's education. Our school system has sustained various cutbacks in recent years, class sizes are increasing, and key test scores have dropped. The time has come to reverse these trends!

The spending caps that you have implemented over the past few years have been significant and don't recognize the costs inherent in operating the increasing physical space of the schools. We know that neighboring communities have recognized the different cost structures within their districts by implementing a differentiated spending target for the Board of Education vs. the rest of the town budget. As you are considering your spending plan for this coming year, please consider this option as well.
