ASG is currently looking into passing a bill which reasons that Texas State should become a smoke-free campus. I and others believe that this is in direct violation of their code of Ethics (article V) and therefore should not be supported by a Senator let alone the student body.
While the evidence is strong that smoking provides no benefits either to the university or the environment, our argument centers around legislation which laughs in the face of its own code of Ethics. Article V states:
1) The members of ASG shall be expected and required to follow all established university policy regarding student conduct. Furthermore, at no time shall ASG engage in any discriminatory behavior towards any group or individual for any reason: discrimination being defined as: Treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit
Smoker's are a minority (survey showing 25\% of students smoke) whose voice is being dismissed by an already standing majority. While the majority's concerns about health and litter are valid there are already laws in place which go un-enforced.
While I agree with their concerns about health and litter an out-right ban on smoking is a violation of our (smoker's) rights. So, let us send smoke signals to ASG via our signatures, letting them know that we are not going to take this.
p.s. In order for us to win this fight, we must begin to comply to some of the rules. Please put your cigarette butts in trash cans/ash trays, try to respect others by smoking away from big crowds (I.E. if walking through the quad try to stay on the left or right instead of in the middle).
By giving the opposition some of these simple concessions their argument loses some validity while making the smoking community gain face. If we are really concerned about our rights we should recognize the rights of others to not breathe our second-hand or have to pick up after us.
