Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Transit

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is one of the only remaining (and quite possibly the largest) major transit system receiving its local share of operating funds from property taxes. This method of funding can prove unstable at times. This has been seen in the past few years with the need for service cuts and fare increases. In 1999, MCTS operated a total of 75 routes with 38 providing regular service. Today MCTS operates a total of only 57 routes with 29 providing regular service.

In addition, the seven county region has eight different transit services, each with their own fare structure, service standards, and schedules. The levels of integration and connectivity between services range from good to poor to nonexistent. Intra-region travel, when possible, can be costly and time consuming.

Transit is an important component to ensuring a strong, economically sound and competitive region. Therefore the undersigned hereby show their support for the foundation of a regional transit authority, allowing for a stronger, stable, integrated transit network. And urge the officials of Southeastern Wisconsin to show their support as well.
