Speak Up for "Speak"

Wesley Scroggins of Missouri State University is trying to ban "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson from being taught in Republic, Missouri, schools. "Speak" is a Prinz Honor winner and has been highly acclaimed for over 10 years for its sensitive portrayal of a young woman struggling to overcome the aftermath of rape.
More importantly, "Speak" has had a profoundly positive effect on the countless young people who have read it - mainly young women but certainly not exclusively.
We ask you to make sure that "Speak" is not banned in the Republic School District. "Speak" is definitely not "soft pornography," as it is described by Scroggins, but is, in fact, an extremely important literary work that has a profoundly positive effect on young people. Please do not ban it.
