Dear reader,

Every second, of every day, of every year, an animal dies in an experiment in the United States. Can you imagine how many of these poor creatures die every day all around the world? Scientists and researchers do diverse experiments of cruelty on the innocent lives of non-human animals. Vivisection, LD-50 and the Draize tests are just a few examples of all the barbaric practices that are done on our planet we call civilized. Animal experimentation is not only cruel, horrific, barbaric and heartbreaking, it is also useless. Ninety-four percent of animal testing is done to determine the safety of cosmetics and household products. That only leaves 6\% for medical research. The saving of one life cannot be justified by the killing of another. We already know how dangerous various ingredients are and we can easily predict the irritation level with the use of computer programs.

Since the beginning of mankind, humans have always felt a certain level of curiosity about animals. We had to perceive this need of information. That is why from the time that people developed knives, billions of non-human animals have been burnt, crushed, sliced, electrocuted, tortured with drugs, tested with makeup, poisoned with toxic chemicals, tormented in psychological testing and subjected to other atrocities. This type of animal testing basically involves live animals being tested on. These various experiments have been renamed to vivisection. It began because of religious people who were against the dissection of human corpses. When these people finally stopped cutting apart animals for their simple curiosity, it was already too late. Vivisection started to be used for medical and educational purposes. These tests are known to be the most horrifying tests done on living creatures.

There are other types of studies that are done with the help of animals. Some tests measure the amount of toxic and chemical substances that it will take in a single dose to kill a being. LD-50 is one of these tests. Each year, millions of dogs, cats, rabbits, monkeys and other types of animals are killed because of lethal doses of toxic and chemicals. During the examination, there are animals that are held down and people do insane things like forcing dangerous and harmful substances into their stomachs with the help of a special kind of tube. Scientists often face situations where the test causes immediate death on some animals because of stomach ruptures or from bulks of chemical dosages. Sometimes, researchers apply lethal doses to the rectum, vagina and eyes. It is also possible for them to force the poor creatures to inhale toxic odors through a gas mask. LD-50 is basically a test that is done on a group of animals that are forced to inhale, ingest or otherwise consume a chemical or toxic substance. Slowly, the conditions of the animals regress until 50\% of the animals die. That is when the test is complete. The rest of the animals are then used in autopsies so that the researchers can determine which organs were affected by the lethal dose of toxic or chemical substances and which were not.

Another kind of experiment that is done on animals is called the Draize test. There are two types of draize tests. One that is done in the eye and the other on the skin. The draize eye irritancy test has been used since 1944. Ophthalmologist Stephen Kaufman, of the University Medical Center of New York said I quote: I have no use for Draize test data because the rabbit eye differs from the human eye. At the John Hopkins Center for Alternative to Animal Testing stated: The draize test does not adequately reflect the degree of irritancy in humans. Did you know that every 72 hours, a rabbit goes blind in a laboratory because of this type of animal testing. What generally happens during Draize experiments is that they take six to nine albino rabbits that they immobilize in stocks from which only the rabbits heads protrude. The rabbits eyes are held open with clips at the lid to prevent blinking. Often, these poor creatures break their necks or backs because they are too frightened and to escape. The draize test lasts from seven to eighteen days. The reactions of the non-human animals may vary and include swelling of the eyelids, bleeding, blindness and inflammation of the iris. The worst part of all of this, is that there is no law that obligates animal testing of cosmetics and household products. However, the FDA (food and drug administration) recommends that the companies substantiate the safety of their products or attach a warning label in case of a pursuit in the court of justice.

All these activities that humans do on innocent animals are quite cruel and harsh. The attitude of humans is madness and the poor animals are innocent in this act. They havent done anything to us and this is how we call ourselves civilized. Researchers do all sorts of terrible things. They cause severe head traumas to non-human primates just for the sake of psychological testing. Pigs are actually restrained and burned alive until the US army can remove the charred flesh (burnt skin). The US army does this because they want to practice their survival skills. At the Uniformed Services University for the department of defense, they used dogs to measure the rate off recoveries from severe injuries. Vivisectors strapped down the dogs and cut apart into their knees to be able to leave flaps sticking out. These were only a very few examples of what actually happens on earth. All these horrible acts prove that some of us humans have no principals. Some people have no values because even though we know that the reactions of animals are not the same as human reactions, we continue doing experiments on the animals. Until there is peace between humans and animals, our world can not be called civilized. People could do something to help stop this fierce attitude by starting to buy products that are not tested on animals. Generally, it is written on the label and if there is no indications, it often means that it is pragmatic and therefor tested on animals.
