On what I believe was November 4th (date may be off, I don't have all the info), my teacher's son's girlfriend Alana was struck with a disease that paralyzed her from the neck down. She was in her Junior year of high school. This disease is very rare: only about 1 in a million will ever get it. Probably less than that. Alana woke up one morning, and her neck hurt. Within a day, she was paralyzed. She was taken to the local hospital, and then moved to a extra-care facility in Orange County. For months, she was on a ventilator, and could not move. any part of her body. Now, after a couple of months of rehab and slowly getting better, Alana is on a smaller ventilator (she can not quite breathe completely by herself yet) and can talk and sometimes mover her shoulders from side to side. But she will almost certainly be paralyzed from the neck down for the rest of her life. Now it's time to bring her home. The problem is that Alana's family needs to completely redo their home to make it wheel-chair accessible (make a ramp up to the door step, make it an accessible bathroom, make a good bed for her, get a van wheel-chair accessible, etc.). For that they need money, and a lot of it.
At my school, we have started a fund called the Help Bring Alana Home Fund. We sell purple wristbands every day that were designed by Alana herself. They are lavender and say "Keep Smiling"
Throughout it all, Alana has never stopped smiling.
Now, I'm not asking you for money or donations; just your prayers. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for any and all prayers for Alana.
And remember:
Keep Smiling.
