The Neopets Trading Card Game

In September of 2003 the well known trading card company Wizards of The Coast teamed up with Neopets Inc. to create and market a trading card game for the mega-popular Neopets. This game was based upon the characters, items, and events of the virtual pet site http://www.neopets.com. This game was created by the administration of Neopets or The Neopets Team the founder of which, Adam Powell, a long time Magic: The Gathering veteran, wanted to make an original game that would be fun and embody the Neopets spirit. The Neopets TCG was just that, a new, fun, and original TCG. This wasnt simply an attempt to make a copy of Magic like Duel Masters, but actually, a very well balanced trading card game with a fun outwards look that would appeal to children and deep in depth strategies that could appeal to older players and adults.
Neopets was a game played where players brought the characters and pets from the site right onto the card table and attempted to win contest in which there pets had to win in either the Strength, Agility, Magic, or Intelligence arena to add points into their bank and get closer to winning the game. Both Neopian Heroes and Villians could be brought into play along with quests, curses, locations, and constellations in the Neopian sky.
Neopets was never dominated by a single staple deck, nor did the card price inflate to unreasonable prices. The Neopets TCG was beloved by its players and was quite possibly the best TCG Wizards of The Coast has made since the hugely successful Pokemon TCG, about 7-10 years ago.
Now four years later the Neopets TCG is being discontinued, and why, simply because Wizards of the Coast and Neopets Inc. never put the support into it that it needed and deeply deserved. The fact is a game that could have easily rivaled the number one most popular TCG in the world, Wizards own Magic: The Gathering, is being discontinued and new combos, decks, and strategies will never be played by the small but strong player community.
