Troops out of Iraq Now! Fifth Anniversary Protest in Melbourne

On the basis of lies about weapons of mass destruction, John Howard's Coalition government took us to war five years ago, making Australia an accomplice in an illegal war that has caused deaths and untold suffering for millions of people.
As a direct result of the so-called "war on terror", according to some estimates close to I million Iraqis have been killed and 4.2 million people have been made refugees. Iraq's infrastructure has been devastated and its resources plundered. The US troop "surge" and its "Iraqisation" program have been a disaster. We support the majority of Iraqis who are calling for the troops to leave. This could allow unions and other social organisations to start to rebuild a democratic Iraq.
The Howard government continues its unwavering political support for Washington's "war on terror" and killing operation in Iraq, despite a clear majority opposing Australia's involvement. Both major parties also support Australian troops in Afghanistan despite evidence that the presence of occupation forces is assisting the come-back of the reactionary Taliban.
Following the unsubstantiated terror accusations against Dr Mohammad Haneef, the victimisation of Jack Thomas, Mamdouh Habib, the 13 Muslim men in Barwon prison and the nine in Goulburn prison, it's clear that the so-called "war on terror" is a racist attack on our rights.
This is a war being waged in our name and against our wishes. It is a war for oil and profits for huge corporations. It is not about bringing democracy or human rights in the Middle East. Ultimately, only the people of Iraq can win these things, and we should support their struggle by pressuring our government to pull the troops out.
We, the undersigned, pledge our support for a mass protest in Melbourne on March 16, 2008.
We want to make it clear to the incoming Australian government that pulling out our troops is the first step towards peace and democracy in Iraq and that this move should not be subject to decisions by the US.
