Underage Frosh Bracelets

We the undersigned are sincerely troubled by the various faculty Frosh's treatment of underage students . We note that the cost of Frosh is the same irrelevant of age. We note that many underage students when signing up for Frosh bracelets were told either explicitly or by omission, that their Frosh bracelets would gain them access to night events. We stress that the literature surrounding Frosh was very explicit that these events were accessible and enjoyable irrelevant of age. (Q: Im 17, can I still participate in Frosh? A: Of course! We do not serve alcohol to students below the legal drinking age, which in Quebec is 18 years old. However, Frosh is NOT centred around alcohol, and none of our activities require alcohol consumption. Every year we have many participants who are 17 and under, and theyve all had a great time.- AUS Web page concerning Frosh). We note that Frosh has an added attraction as it is viewed as an integral part of integration into the McGill community. These factors combined seem to suggest that under-age students have had access to misleading information concerning this event. Moreover, given the unequal access to events, underage students appear to have paid an unfair price for Frosh. Likewise we stress that there is an added onus on the undergraduate societies to provide clear information about what events individuals can attend; provide greater numbers or more concurrent non-age specific events; or alternatively vary the price of tickets according to access to events. We wish for this to create a long-term shift in the nature of Frosh, so that it is both accessible and enjoyable for the entirety of the first year undergraduate community, and that students do not have to feel (whether it was intentional or unintentional) as if they were beguiled into losing a significant amount of money. Meanwhile, we ask for the undergraduate societies to clarify the cost of Frosh bracelets to this years underage first year community.
