USF Students Seeking to Prohibit the Use of Social Security Numbers as Identification

The Students of the University of South Florida request that social security numbers no longer be used for identification purposes. The government assigned social security numbers were never intended as a form of identification. These numbers are vitally important to every individual American citizen, and the theft of a number could be catastrophic. Based on permutation alone, Identity Theft is highly likely if social security numbers float so freely around campus. The prevalance of the numbers on test forms, OASIS login, residence hall forms, and other University documents is frightening, to say the least, given some of the horror stories that have occured around America. The University has assigned students an ID number, present on Student ID cards, and this number, if used to replace social security numbers on tests and other forms would placate many students, and deter potential cases of Identity Theft. Since all students have a University issued ID number, we feel it reasonable to request that these numbers be used in place of social security numbers. Student Government Computer Services has used the University ID numbers, and it works well for them. Surely it would work well for the rest of the University. We hope to see changes instituted by the Fall Semester of 2005.
