THE ISSUE
As per Indias National AIDS Control Organization, (NACO) an estimated 3.82-4.58 million people are currently living with HIV/AIDS in the country, which as per CIA's National Intelligence Councils report, would jump to 20-25 million by 2010 unless effective prevention methods are put into place. India currently lacks enough supportive programs for vulnerable groups such as sex workers, MSM, drug users and housewives. The country also has limited access to critical health services, including treatment for STDs, and confidential HIV/AIDS testing. In India, per capita, each individual receives less than $1 per year for AIDS. Despite stepped-up efforts by the Government, local NGOs, and numerous international agencies, there remain significant gaps requiring attention.
ACT NOW
HIV/AIDS in India is an issue where a proactive approach through collaboration of US policy makers and Indian Americans can enormously contribute to reducing the threat of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. USINPAC is trying to convene a joint Senate House briefing to urge the US government to recognize the HIV/AIDS epidemic in India as a foreign policy priority, increasing funding for prevention and treatment, bridging identified gaps in funding and program needs. USINPAC is also mobilizing the Indian American community to participate through financial contributions, public awareness, and volunteerism and create an impact on Capitol Hill towards supporting India in combating the HIV/AIDS crisis. The US government has already funded 14 nations in curbing this menace. Sign this petition and support India to become the 15th country to receive the much-needed US funds for fighting the epidemic.
