I am writing as an Irish citizen who is deeply concerned and saddened by recent judgements issued against the perpetrators of violent sexual crimes.
Most recently the case of Graham Griffiths who violently sexually assaulted a teenager. Mr. Griffiths who has a history of violence was ordered to pay the victim of the horrendous violent attack compensation to the sum of 15,000. This seems in no way adequate. It sends the message if you have the money, you can do what you want.
I believe the justice system is there to protect the people of this country, this judgement, particularly when hot on the heels of the case of Anthony Lyons receiving a similarly lenient sentence and order to pay compensation devalues and shows disregard for the effect violent sexual assaults have on their victims.
Compensation is not enough. If your judges are in doubt of the long term effects of sexual assaults maybe instruct them to consult the Rape Crisis Centre.
Best regards,
