To recover the USA respect and image throughout the world and to change the relationship with Latin America
If the USA wanted to recover respect from other people around the world, and to rebuild their image that has lost moral ground, it should consider itself as just any other country among others, not as a chosen power to impose imperial order or capitalistic policies throughout the world.
OUR OPEN LETTER TO BARACK OBAMA, THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Your government will try to recover the USA image throughout the world and to change the relationship with Latin America. You must realize that your country has the image of the biggest imperial power of human history. Besides the horrible image of a powerful country that interfered upon other nations destiny, that explored their resources throughout the past century, the USA added to its record in this XXIst century the policy of humanitarian wars, which are in fact invasions that cannot hide the goals of exploiting and dominating land and souls. Iraq and Afghanistan are the latest examples of this policy.
Coming out from Iraq immediately is not enough though this is an unavoidable step towards that rescuing of your countrys image. You should do the same in Afghanistan, and you should end the support to Israeli occupation of Palestinian land and recognize the right of Palestinians to a sovereign State. In Latin America you should put an end to Colombia Operation, which favours the military escalation of conflicts in that country, and of those it provokes with neighbor countries, with a high risk of regional crisis favoured by the warmonger attitude of the Colombian government and Army.
In order to demonstrate a change of policy, the USA must absolutely put an end to the blockade on Cuba, to close the Guantanamo base, well known for torture and illegal interrogation of prisoners. The USA should give Guantanamo back to Cuba, ending this secularly long, unbearable and legally incoherent usurpation of Cuban territory. The USA should resume regular relations with this country, respecting the sovereign options of the Cuban people about their own destiny.
The USA must make an open statement that supporting the coup dйtat against the Hugo Chavez government in April 2002 was a serious mistake, as that government was democratically elected and reelected. The USA should put an end with aiding anti-democratic conspiracies in this country, as well as in Bolivia and in Ecuador, and should take an oath of never again getting involved with such activities of intervention in the internal affairs of these countries.
If you want to have friendly relations with Latin America, the USA should immediately destroy the wall in the Mexican border, legalize the status of the immigrant workers in its territory, and to favor the free circulation of people with the same intensity it used to support the free circulation of goods and capital.
The USA should no more see such international organizations, as the WTC, the IMF, the World Bank, as weapons to foster and force their economic policies, those that caused the failure of all governments that followed such receipts. These receipts, by the way, led to the international financial crisis that plagues the whole Earth. The countries from Latin America and from the South of the World should feel free to choose their own ways to face this crisis, a crisis that has its origin in the USA, a country that should cope with its responsibilities and not allow the exportation of the negative outcome of this debacle.
In order to be respected again, the USA should not favor or force the exportation of its media, its cultural industry, its way of life. It can be good enough to the States, but it can be a doom elsewhere. These formulas, generally imposed, favor press uniformity, prejudices and market minded behavior around the world. Let the USA let each and every country choose the ways of thinking about their identity, their own way of looking at the world, of living and producing art and culture.
An original style of government would be that of forgetting any idea that the USA should impose what it, as a State, thinks is democratic. Let every single country choose its own way. The USA did not invent democracy, and it is not more democratic than many other countries.
The USA should resign to any idea that it is a world large empire that takes care of the imperialistic order in a planet scale. You should favor the growing of a multi-polar world, where all countries have a voice upon decisive issues. The USA should favor the end of the veto right in the UN Security Council, making it more democratic. The UN decisions about ending the blockade on Cuba, on the rights of the Palestinian people to a sovereign State, should be fostered, and they now are blocked by an USA veto. If other countries block decisions with the veto right, this should end with the universal banning of that right.
Last but not least, if the USA wanted to recover respect from other people around the world, and to rebuild their image that has lost moral ground, it should consider itself as just any other country among others, not as a chosen power to impose imperial order or capitalistic policies throughout the world. If other countries and other people choose an anti-capitalistic and an anti-imperialist way, this should be respected. The USA should sign the Kyoto Agreement, accepting to reduce its own emission of polluting gases, a basic condition towards a new platform of a fight against the environmental destruction of the Earth. You should lower the military budget, and transfer these resources to social investment. You should stand against the private monopoly of the media, the tobacco industry, the hiring of mercenary militias. The USA should have as a prime purpose building a just society, beginning with your own country, where, among other countries of central capitalism, inequality has grown the most in recent years.
If you do all that, or at least you move in this sense, we think you will be able to count with respect and friend relations with the people of Latin America.
