Atlantic Gateway

Since federal and provincial spending on twinned
highways in the Atlantic region now stands in contradiction to the goals
of the Kyoto Accord (to reduce highway traffic and improve the
environment) and since railways in Atlantic Canada and New England have
recently been diverting traffic to our highways (because it is cheaper
for them to do this than to send the shipments by rail), the undersigned
urge both levels of government to ensure improved railway infrastructure
is made a key priority in the proposal to create an Atlantic Gateway
transportation corridor to Central and Western Canada.

26. Brian H | With trains burning 5 times less fuel than trucks to move the same amount of freight and with the trucking industry suffering a labour shortage, it only makes sense to improve rail infrastructure.
