HELP MAKE SB77 "AMENDMENT TO UTAH'S INDOOR CLEAN AIR ACT" LAW
For every two hours you spend in a smoke-filled environment such as a bar or nightclub, you are inhaling the equivalent of one pack of cigarettes in secondhand smoke.
For those who work in these environments for an eight-hour shift, they are inhaling the equivalent of four packs of cigarettes during their shift! This is extremely detrimental to their health, and something needs to be done about it!
This is the approach that several other states took when banning cigarettes from all public places. It was done to protect the workers. Many other states have followed with similar legislation. Recently the Utah State Senate narrowly passed SB77 to ban smoking in Utahs private clubs. In order for this bill to become law, it must now pass the House of Representatives.
Utah prides itself as one of the most health-conscious states in the country, and consistently ranks in the top 5 for healthiest places to live in the USA. In the states that have passed similar anti-smoking legislation, there are far fewer smokers and tobacco-related illnesses now than there were just a few years ago. And businesses such as bars and nightclubs are doing better than ever! SLCparty.com polls suggest that over 65\% of those polled support banning smoking in nightclubs and bars. By making our nightclubs and bars smoke free, we can say goodbye to red irritated eyes, congestion, cough, headaches, and smelly clothes - all related to 2nd hand smoke. Our smoke sensitive friends and asthmatics will be able to join us once again!
Why don't our elected officials here in the great state of Utah follow in the footsteps of California and other states and enact a similar law in order to protect the health of people who work in bars and nightclubs, as well as those who frequent these establishments? Do they not care about the health and well being of their residents? How do lobbyists from the tobacco industry control them so well, especially in conservative Utah?
By signing this petition, you're demanding your representatives to pass SB77 which bans smoking in private clubs in order to protect the health and well being of those who work in such environments as well as those who frequent those establishments.
Take action, sign this petition, and your signatures will be forwarded to your elected officials in Utah. We CAN make a difference!
