DEMAND FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION THAT IS EQUAL AND CONSTITUTIONAL IN THE STATE OF OHIO
DEMAND FOR AN END TO DELAYS AND EXCUSES OF THE TAFT ADMINISTRATION WHICH VIOLATE THE RIGHTS OF STUDENTS TO EQUAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN OHIO
To: Governor Robert Taft
From: Parents, Teachers and Citizens of Ohio
The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled once again that the Ohio public school funding system is unconstitutional according to the standards of our state constitution.
This is the fourth ruling on the matter and yet another confirmation that Ohio's present form of funding education is not only substandard but in violation of our rights. It's time to fix the problem.
We, the undersigned, teach in public schools, have children attending Ohio's public schools, and reside in a state where students are not adequately prepared for the workforce in our state. As Ohio citizens we have an obligation to our children, our students, and our fellow citizens to challenge a government that refuses to abide by the laws of our state. We also have an obligation as citizens of the United States of America to challenge a state government that violates the 14th amendment rights of citizens.
Institutional discrimination must end in Ohio's public schools now. The current neglect of Ohio's public school children will persist only if we as Ohio citizens fail to rise up, speak out, and challenge the unjust system of public school funding in Ohio.
As parents, teachers, and citizens, we demand the State of Ohio to abide by the law and provide the funding and support needed for a quality education for all of Ohio's children NOW.
"We must seek an improvement in standards of material
well-being within the principles of liberty, justice
and equality. That is the way to a better life in
America. It is the way to progress and production; the
way to safety and to peace. It is the way to a people
strong, self-reliant and happy."
----- U.S. Senator Robert A. Taft. February 10, 1948.
How ironic that more than 50 years after Senator Robert A. Taft called for improvements in educational standards, his descendent, Governor Robert Taft , continues to stall on the issue of proper funding of public education in Ohio.
The rights to a quality education can no longer be limited only to the privileged children of Ohio. It's time to fix the funding formula in the state NOW to ensure that ALL Ohio children receive an equal opportunity for the educational facilities and resources they need for success in the workforce.
The Ohio Supreme Court has handed down its decision, and we, the people demand the protection guaranteed to us by the U.S. Constitution an end to the delays of the current Taft administration.
No more excuses. No more waiting.
We demand equal, quality education for all of Ohio's children NOW.
"The Constitution protects us whether the state is
flush or destitute. The Free Speech Clause of the
United States Constitution, the Equal Protection
Clause of the United States Constitution, the Thorough
and Efficient Clause of the Ohio Constitution, and all
other provisions of the Ohio and United States
Constitutions protect and guard us at all time."
----- Judge Paul E. Pfeifer. December 11, 2002.
