On behalf of the students of the Centre for Linguistics, SLL&CS, JNU, we the undersigned, would like to bring to your notice that Prof. Utpal Lahiri, one of the most well-regarded semanticists in the world today, has been teaching in CL for the last two and half years as an invited Guest faculty. Unfortunately, the University rules do not permit extending his invitation any further. It has also come to our attention that he has been offered a position at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad, under a UGC scheme, Encore Professorship, for two years. Since the Centre for Linguistics, JNU is considered one of the best Linguistics departments in the country, it is most unfortunate that Prof. Lahiri will no longer be a part of the Centre.
Emphasizing our department’s urgent need for a semanticist, we request you to kindly ensure a position for him. Prof. Lahiri’s expertise has, and is still benefiting the students of the Centre from the postgraduates to the research scholars, many of whom are currently working with him too. Since he has been with us for the past two and a half years, we appeal to you to offer him a regular post at the Centre, so that we can continue to benefit from his able guidance.
