This petition is concerned with securing the release of Henry Stableford, an innocent British man arrested in Italy on groundless charges and facing extradition to Morocco.
Henry was one of four crew hired in 1997 by Crewseekers, a reputable Southampton UK based charter company, to deliver a boat to Morocco. The Duanas was formerly the HMS Cygnet, a Royal Navy patrol vessel once commanded by Tim Lawrence, the Princess Royal's husband, and sold by Her Majesty's Government through a broker to the new owners. Upon arrival in Agadir the boat was thoroughly searched and cleared by Moroccan customs and the crew returned home to the UK.
Two months later - unbeknown to the delivery crew, the brokers, and the original owners - the Duanas was used by a Colombian drug cartel with a Colombian crew to smuggle cocaine. They were caught off the Moroccan coast. No suggestion was ever made or evidence tendered that the UK crew or sellers of the boat knew that the owner was part of a cartel, or that they had any nexus whatsoever to the drugs later seized from the vessel.
Henry is the second crew member of the Duanas to befall this fate. John Packwood was arrested in Spain in October 2004, held in a Spanish prison for 8 months before being extradited to Morocco for 5 months, and then subsequently pardoned by the King of Morocco on the basis that there was no case against him. The injustice of John's case attracted the support of many celebrities and well known public figures, including George Clooney, Hugh Grant, Mark Knopfler, Andrew Turner MP and numerous MEPs, who campaigned for his release with his lawyers.
The friends of Henry Stableford are making a request for public support to ensure that another innocent man is returned home as soon as possible.
We also wish to be assured that the UK government and all relevant international bodies, including those in Italy and Morocco, will undertake to ensure that this injustice is corrected without delay.
