Dukes firing of Olivia Vaughn from the housekeeping staff, one day before the end of her probationary period and ten days before Christmas is outrageous and deeply troubling for its implications. Olivia is widely known by her students, the RA staff at Gilbert-Addoms dorm, her co-workers, Local 77 representatives, and members of Durham CAN as doing outstanding work for Duke University. She also takes deep and vocal pride in the relationships of trust she forms with freshmen at Gilbert-Addoms, despite Dukes 6/24/04 memo against housekeepers congregating in student break rooms and holding meaningful conversations with students.
Dukes refusal to reverse its decision, its stated reason for Olivias dismissal (she doesnt fit the profile of the type of worker we want), and managements refusal to discuss the matter further with Local 77 representatives is unacceptable. We demand immediate rehiring of Olivia and a reversal of Dukes segregationist policy preventing relationships between housekeepers and students.
